USADF Grantee Transforms Dreams Into Fashion Success in the DRC

Jul 13, 2023

In the town of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, a remarkable enterprise called Judith Fashion was created by a determined woman named Judith Nyakasane. Officially operating since October 2022, Judith Fashion specializes in modern sewing and the manufacturing of various types of clothing. Judith's entrepreneurial spirit and determination are even more remarkable considering her physical disability. Despite her limitations, she took charge of her own life and her family's well-being by establishing her business, which has not only created job opportunities but also generates income for herself and others.

The path to success for Judith Fashion was not without challenges. The enterprise faced several obstacles that threatened its growth and sustainability. Judith initially operated from a tiny room at her family residence, which not only led to two fire accidents but also made it impossible to accommodate customers or showcase her final products effectively. Additionally, the absence of proper equipment hindered her ability to fulfill orders and provide the desired final products. Moreover, seed capital was a significant hurdle for Judith. Without sufficient funds, she struggled to purchase materials and fabrics necessary for clothing production. This resulted in delays in fulfilling orders and meeting customer expectations. Lastly, as a result of Judith's physical handicap, she required a helping hand to assist her with the daily needs of the business' operations.

However, Judith's resilience and determination led to decisive actions that transformed her business. In 2022, she was awarded a US$5K grant, under the Youlima Youth Incubator Program (a collaboration between USADF and CITI). With the help of received funds, she was able to move her workshop to a more spacious location within the city and invest in new equipment, acquiring six different types of sewing machines. This change not only improved safety but also attracted a larger customer base, leading to increased sales and visibility. This upgrade also enhanced her production capacity, allowing her to take on more orders and provide high-quality garments efficiently. Furthermore, Judith was able to expand her workforce, which doubled to four full-time staff member. This not only helped manage the workload but also contributed to the economic development of the community. One such employee, Mrs. Bita Bishobekwa, a single mother responsible for the artistic department, has been working since April 2022. Through her employment, she can provide for her two children, pay their school fees, and cover essential bills.

As a result of Judith's unwavering determination, the enterprise has achieved remarkable results. Her net income increased by over 300 percent, from around $100 per month to approximately $400-$500 per month. This surge in income has allowed her to cover expenses, pay taxes, purchase raw materials, and reinvest in the growth of her business. The expansion of her workforce has not only created employment opportunities but also empowered individuals like Mrs. Bishobekwa to provide for their families and improve their quality of life.
